Why getting out matters
A cup of tea in a seafront café. A wander round the garden centre. A Sunday lunch with the grandchildren. For most of us, these small trips out are just part of life. For an older or disabled loved one, they can slowly become harder to manage, and then quietly stop altogether.
When that happens, the world can shrink to the four walls of home. Days blur into one another. Friends drift out of touch, appointments get missed and confidence fades. Loneliness is not just an unhappy feeling either. It can affect sleep, mood, appetite and physical health.
The good news is that it does not have to be this way. With the right support, your loved one can keep enjoying the people, places and routines that matter to them. That is exactly what our Trips Out Support is here for.
What is Trips Out Support?
Our Trips Out Support service gives elderly and disabled people practical help and friendly company so they can get out and about with confidence. Whether it is a hospital appointment or a trip to the shops, one of our team is there alongside them, from the front door and back again.
It is designed for people who might be:
- Living with limited mobility or a long-term health condition
- Feeling less confident out alone after a fall, illness or hospital stay
- Living on their own, with family far away or busy with work
- Finding that appointments and errands have become stressful
- Simply missing the company of someone to share a day out with
We support people across Sussex and much of the South East. Every trip is planned around the individual, their interests and what they need on the day.
Appointment companions
Medical appointments can feel daunting, especially in a busy hospital or an unfamiliar clinic. We can go along to GP visits, hospital appointments and check-ups, offering reassurance and practical help throughout. The same goes for everyday appointments that help someone feel like themselves, such as the hairdresser.
Social outings
Sometimes the best medicine is a change of scenery. We support trips to cafés, parks, shops and local attractions, turning a simple outing into something to look forward to.
Visiting family and friends
Staying close to the people you love should not depend on how easy it is to get there. We help remove the barriers that stop people seeing family and friends, so those precious moments together keep happening.
Ideas for trips out in Sussex
One of the joys of living in Sussex is how much there is on the doorstep. Here are a few ideas for days out we can help with:
- A stroll along the seafront. Brighton, Hove, Worthing and Eastbourne all have flat promenades, plenty of benches and cafés for a well-earned break.
- Gardens and green spaces. From local parks to the likes of Sheffield Park or Wakehurst, a gentle wander among the flowers can lift anyone’s spirits.
- A favourite café or pub lunch. Returning to a familiar spot can mean as much as discovering somewhere new.
- Shopping trips. Choosing your own groceries, clothes or gifts is an important part of independence.
- Historic towns. Lewes, Arundel and Rye are full of character, with independent shops and tearooms to explore.
- Clubs, groups and places of worship. Keeping up a regular weekly routine helps people stay part of their community.
The best trip is always the one your loved one would choose. We take time to get to know what they enjoy and plan around their energy levels, mobility and comfort.
The benefits of supported trips out
For your loved one
Regular trips out help people stay connected to the world around them. They bring fresh air, gentle exercise and conversation. They give the week a shape and something to look forward to. Above all, they help people keep their independence, making their own choices about where to go and what to do.
For someone whose confidence has taken a knock, having a patient companion by their side can make all the difference. Our team is experienced in providing both physical and emotional support for people with limited mobility. We never rush, and we always put safety, comfort and dignity first.
For you and your family
If you care for a parent or relative, you will know how hard it can be to juggle everything. You might live too far away to help regularly, or work commitments might clash with appointment times. It is natural to worry about them getting out alone, or about them not getting out at all.
Trips Out Support gives families real peace of mind. You know your loved one is in safe hands, with someone friendly and reliable. It also means the time you do spend together can be about enjoying each other’s company, rather than racing between errands.
Safe, trusted support
Inviting someone new into a loved one’s life is a big step, so trust matters. DBS checks are available, and our whole team is trained to keep every trip safe, comfortable and dignified. Every outing is personalised, with reliable, friendly company your loved one can feel at ease with.
Getting started
If you think Trips Out Support could help someone you love, the first step is simply a conversation. Tell us about them, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what kind of support would make life easier. We will work with you to put together outings that suit them.
Trips out also sit alongside our wider support packages, including companionship services and after hospital support, so we can build the right mix of help as needs change.
Staying connected keeps us well. With a little support, your loved one can keep enjoying everything Sussex has to offer. Find out more about Trips Out Support or contact our friendly team on 01273 705592 to talk it through.
