A cleaner home is a safer home
Let’s be upfront: Bang Tidy is a cleaning and support company, not a fire safety consultancy. We can’t fireproof your property, and we’d be wary of any cleaning company who says they can. What we can do is tackle the everyday things that make fires more likely to start and harder to escape from. Clutter, built-up grease, blocked exits and dust around electrics are all part of the job we do every day. And because our team spends real time inside homes, we’re often the first to notice when something doesn’t look right.
Here’s how we help UK landlords and homeowners reduce fire risk, and where our role ends.
Why clutter and grime matter
Most house fires start small: a pan left on the hob, a heater too close to a pile of washing, an overloaded plug. What happens next often depends on what’s around it.
- More fuel. Piles of paper, cardboard, clothes and bags give a small fire plenty to feed on, so it spreads faster.
- Blocked escape routes. Cluttered hallways, stairs and doorways slow people down when every second counts. They also make it harder for firefighters to get in.
- Hidden hazards. Clutter can cover damaged cables, overloaded sockets and heaters, so nobody spots them until it’s too late.
- Grease and dust. Built-up cooking grease is highly flammable, and dust and lint around appliances can catch light from heat or a spark.
None of this needs a big renovation to fix. A lot of it comes down to regular, thorough cleaning and someone keeping an eye out.
What we do on a clean
Whether it’s a one-off deep clean, an end of tenancy clean or regular home help, these are the jobs that also help lower fire risk.
- Clearing clutter – We sort, bag and remove rubbish, old paperwork, cardboard and unwanted items, always with the occupant’s agreement. Less stuff lying around means less for a fire to spread through.
- Keeping escape routes clear – We pay particular attention to hallways, stairs, landings and the space in front of doors and windows. Our aim is a clear route out of every room.
- Degreasing kitchens – We clean hobs, ovens, grill pans, splashbacks and extractor hoods, where grease builds up quietly. We also clear crumbs from toasters and wipe down the area around the cooker so nothing flammable sits close to the heat.
- Dusting around appliances and electrics – We carefully remove dust and debris from around sockets, extension leads, heaters and the backs of appliances. Where it’s safe and accessible, we clear lint from around tumble dryers, a common source of household fires.
- Bins and outdoor areas – Overflowing bins and rubbish piled against a property can be a target for arson. We clear waste away and tidy bin stores and side passages.
What we flag when we spot it
This is where we add the most value. Our cleaners aren’t electricians or fire inspectors, but they are trained to notice things and tell you about them. If we see something concerning, we’ll report it to the landlord, homeowner or agreed contact, usually with photos, so the right professional can deal with it.
Things we commonly flag include:
- Smoke alarms that are missing, hanging off the ceiling, covered, or chirping for a new battery
- Carbon monoxide alarms that appear to be missing near a boiler or wood burner
- Overloaded sockets and extension leads plugged into each other (“daisy-chaining”)
- Frayed, scorched or damaged cables and plugs
- Scorch marks around sockets, light fittings or appliances
- Portable heaters placed near curtains, bedding or furniture
- Candles, ashtrays or signs of smoking near soft furnishings
- Fire doors propped open, damaged or missing their closers
- Gas cylinders, fuel cans or chemicals stored indoors or in escape routes
- Mobility scooters or e-bikes being charged in hallways or overnight
- Signs of a leaking or poorly maintained gas appliance, such as soot staining
We can’t fix these issues ourselves, and we won’t touch electrics or gas. But a quick message from us can be the prompt that gets them sorted before they become a problem.
Hoarded homes and vulnerable occupants
Fire risk is at its highest where clutter is at its worst. In a hoarded home, rooms can be impassable, exits blocked and electrical hazards buried out of sight. Fire services across the UK regularly highlight hoarding as a serious risk, both to the people living there and to the crews who respond. Our hoarder cleaning and support service works at the person’s pace and without judgement. We start by making the most important areas safe: clearing a route through the home, freeing up the kitchen and getting space around heaters and electrics.
The same goes for older or vulnerable people we support through welfare checks and home help. If we notice a change, such as a hob left on, a heater moved next to a chair, or clutter starting to build up again, we’ll raise it with family or the agreed contact. Many fire and rescue services offer free home fire safety visits for people at higher risk. Where it’s appropriate, we can suggest one or help arrange it.
What we don’t do
A clean, clutter-free property is one part of fire safety, not the whole picture. We don’t carry out fire risk assessments, test or install alarms, inspect electrics or service gas appliances. Those jobs need qualified professionals.
If you’re a landlord in England, your legal duties include:
- A smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation
- A carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, such as a boiler or wood burner (gas cookers excluded)
- An annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer
- An electrical safety inspection (EICR) by a qualified electrician at least every five years
- Furnishings that meet fire safety standards, if you let the property furnished
HMOs and blocks of flats carry extra duties, and the rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In general local council or fire brigade can advise on what applies to your property, as this is a non-exhaustive list that needs to be checked with the right authorities.
Think of us as an extra pair of eyes. We keep the property clean and clear, and we tell you what we’ve seen, so you can act on it.
